In this interview, we talk with Nectarine Girl about her music-making process, her musical influences, and the emotions that inspired her latest album, Good Excuses For Laziness.
Nectarine Girl: blue, purple and soft pink music illuminating clouds in a snowstorm.
Name a color, a season, and a moment of the day that describes your music. (Ex: My music sounds pink, like a morning in spring.)
my music sounds like a blue, purple and soft pink sunset illuminating clouds in a snowstorm.
🎼 How do you find inspiration for your lyrics and melodies?
I come up with chords first always, then put myself into a trance/dreamlike state by playing them over and over again. Doing this transports me into the emotional world the chords inhabit, then I just let random words and melodies come to me. After I find something I like I use that as a blueprint then build the rest of the song around it.
⭐If you could collaborate with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Kim Petras, FKA Twigs or Caroline Polachek.
You recently released an album titled Good Excuses For Laziness. What is your favorite song on the album and why?
My favorite song on the album right now is probably “i guess, i guess”. It feels really different from everything else on the album because it doesn’t follow song form in the same way as the others. It’s this droning kind of liminal gentle space where you lose track of time and where you are. My girlfriend Thea and I produced it to feel exactly that way. It was written about the shock of losing someone you love and I think we captured that kind of denial/rejection of reality in a way that feels right.
Which three artists have influenced your latest album?
My Bloody Valentine, They are gutting a body of water, Ringo Deathstarr
If you were a fantasy creature, you’d be…
Alicorn (unicorn and pegasus)

What’s your favorite TV show?
Adventure Time
What is a part of your body you can drag about?
My natural cherry red hair
Tell us about your pyjamas
I’ve been wearing the same pajamas since I was in 5th grade. They are hot pink shorts with white polkadots that look like a skirt.
