It’s spooky season and we wanted to make a compilation of the creepiest legs and stories in the music industry. Here we are with our top 10. If you know more stories you can write them in the comments.
1. The disappearance of Richey James Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers.
Richey had previously been hospitalized for anorexia, self-harm and alcohol abuse but he was supposed to fly to America on tour that day. But on February 1, 1995, he drove to his flat in Cardiff, where he left his passport, credit card, and Prozac before heading to a service station near Severn Bridge, a notorious suicide spot. Although there were people that claimed to see him in the Canary Islands, there is no real evidence of this and he was declared dead in 2008.
2. Debbie Harry, the lead singer of Blondie met Ted Bundy
Debbie Harry supposedly met the serial killer Ted Bundy.
Harry recalled to Dazed: “I was trying to get across town to an after-hours club. A little white car pulls up, and the guy offers me a ride. So I just continued to try and flag a cab down. But he was very persistent, and he asked me where I was going. It was only a couple of blocks away, and he said, ‘well, I’ll give you a ride’.” It’s the classic set-up that has seen many victims, especially in the seventies, meet their end.
When Harry got into the car, she quickly realized her mistake. The VW Beetle was stripped down on the inside, the doors had no handles, there was only a tiny crack in the window, and the driver smelled putrid — it was a horror movie scenario. It was clear that this was not a good position to be in. Harry had to do something, and fast.
She moved her arm out of the window and tried to open the window from the outside “As soon as he saw that, he tried to turn the corner really fast, and I spun out of the car and landed in the middle of the street,” recalled Harry.
3. The album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is dedicated to Anne Frank
“I would go to bed every night and have dreams about having a time machine and somehow I’d have the ability to move through time and space freely, and save Anne Frank. Do you think that’s embarrassing?” – Jeff Mangum in an interview with Puncture
The verses include lyrics about “pianos filled with flames” and eating “tomatoes and radio wires.” “Anna’s ghost all around/ Hear her voice as it’s rolling and ringing through me.” “The only girl I’ve ever loved was born with roses in her eyes but then they buried her alive. One evening, 1945, with just her sister at her side”
4. The Mayhem‘s member “Dead” suicide and how his bandmate “Euronymous” took pictures of his body
Mayhem is one of the biggest black metal bands but it has been involved in many scandals. One of them was the suicide of one of its members “Dead” He had always been a weird guy. People say that he was obsessed with death. He used to cut himself and his suicide wasn’t surprising for his band mates. His body was found by Euronymous, who had to climb through an open window as the doors were locked and there were no other keys to the house. Instead of calling the police immediately, he visited a nearby shop to purchase a disposable camera with which he photographed the body; after re-arranging some items for his pictures, he proceeded to call emergency services. He also collected parts of his cranium to send them to their friends and after a few years, they were also up for sale.
5. Slipknot’s drummer Shawn Crahan used to carry a dead crow with him
Shawn usually carried a jar with a dead crown that he let rot for so long that it turned into a gelatinous fluid. Crahan would bring the jar out before every show so that he and his bandmates could take huffs from it and usually throw up. Slipknot did this to “see what death smelled like, have that inside you, [and get] you in that dark place,” says Sid Wilson.
During one performance, fans demanded to have the jar. They thought that they would smell it and made them sick but it turns out that they something worse: they ate it.
